Postmodernism in Moroccan Philosophical Thought: On the Crisis of Reception and Application

Volume 14|Issue 55| Winter 2026 |Theme of the Issue

Abstract

This study analyses the reception and impact of postmodern discourse within Moroccan philosophical thought. It problematizes “the legitimacy of inviting the discourse and major questions of postmodernism” into the Moroccan intellectual context which has its own particularities that complicate the employment of that discourse and lead us to wonder what our relationship to it could look like. The study clarifies its philosophical and societal usage, then analyses aspects of the critical reception it has received by scholars who saw the preoccupation with postmodern discourse as nothing more than a sign of the alienation of Arab-Moroccan philosophical thought from its social and political reality. The study concludes by emphasizing the necessity of adjusting our understanding of this discourse and considering it a stage in the evolution of modernity itself, the legitimacy of which rests on the need to continue reflecting on the Arab modernist project.
