Submission Guidelines

The following Submission Guidelines outline the editorial requirements of Tabayyun, to help ensure the success of your research submission at all stages of publication – from initial evaluation, via external peer review, to academic editing, stylistic and linguistic editing, the final review, and finally, production and publication. Please review these standards and guidelines carefully and adhere to them closely, to ensure that your submission meets the journal’s publication standards and to facilitate the publication process.

Evaluation and Peer Review Procedures

The journal adheres to an ethical charter that guarantees respect for privacy, confidentiality, objectivity, and academic integrity. Editorial board members, peer reviewers, and editors are prohibited from disclosing any information related to submitted articles, except to the editorial board and authors, and only as required by the processes of initial evaluation, peer review, academic editing, and stylistic and linguistic editing (for further details, see: Publishing Ethics).

Research submissions to the journal pass through seven main stages: an originality check and review of adherence to submission guidelines (14 days); initial evaluation (30 days); external peer review (60-90 days); author’s revision of the draft based on peer review feedback (30 days); academic editing; stylistic editing; and production and publication. Authors may be contacted at any stage if further revisions are required. The timeframes for evaluation and peer review may vary depending on the nature of the research article, the responsiveness of reviewers and authors to the academic and editorial review stages and their deadlines, and the type of article, particularly if it is submitted for a special issue requiring additional editorial work. The editorial board reserves the right to schedule submissions for publication as it deems appropriate within the issue’s production plan. Upon successful completion of the evaluation, peer-review, and substantive editing stages, a formal letter of acceptance may be issued at the author’s request.

  1. The editorial board reviews all submitted articles to verify their alignment with the journal’s specialization and publication guidelines. All articles that meet these formal requirements are then subjected to a plagiarism check to verify that they are original, designated exclusively for publication in Tabayyun, and have not been previously published in any electronic or print publication nor submitted simultaneously to any other entity, whether in Arabic or any other language (this excludes articles presented at conferences, forums, or seminars without a corresponding publication track, provided that the authors acknowledge this under the heading “Disclaimer and Acknowledgements,” before the article’s bibliography). The journal adheres to a strict policy regarding plagiarism and the misuse of references and documentation. Any copying from published works, verbatim or paraphrased, without proper attribution, or unauthorized use of ideas, data, translations, images, or tables, constitutes a clear violation of the ethics of academic research and academic publishing (see: Publishing Ethics).
  2. The editorial board reserves the right to reject a submission or withdraw it after publication if it is shown to have involved plagiarism or misquotation. The journal emphasises that authors must adhere to the standards of complete and accurate academic referencing, as followed by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies and its journals, while respecting intellectual property rights at all stages of research preparation, peer review, and publication. In this context, the journal stresses the need for transparency in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI): authors must explicitly disclose any use of such tools. Failure to disclose such use constitutes a breach of publication ethics and may result in the rejection or withdrawal of the submission at the discretion of the editorial board (see: AI Ethics and Best Practice).
  3. After verifying that a research submission meets the publication criteria and passes the originality check, it is referred for an initial evaluation by the journal’s editorial board to determine its eligibility for external peer review. The journal reserves the right to reject a submission at this stage without providing an explanation.
  4. A submission that passes the initial review is then sent for double-blind peer review. If the reviewers’ reports differ, or their recommendations conflict, the submission is referred to a third reviewer. The journal is committed to informing the authors of its final decision, based on the reviewers’ comments: acceptance after minor revisions, acceptance after substantial revisions, or rejection. When submitting a submission, authors may suggest the names of reviewers they wish to exclude from the review process, such as in cases of potential conflicts of interest, or of prior personal or institutional knowledge of the author’s identity which could compromise the impartiality of the review process.
  5. If the editorial board decides to accept a submission after revisions, whether minor or substantial, the authors are asked to submit a revised draft within 30 days.
  6. The journal is committed to publishing submissions that meet the reviewers’ requirements and successfully pass the academic editorial process. These stages include the editorial board’s review of the text, verification of its terminology and concepts, and examination of its structure and the clarity of its ideas. The board may request additional revisions from the authors, either stylistic or substantive, to ensure that the articles is ready for publication.
  7. After final acceptance for publication, the articles is sent for stylistic and linguistic editing. Before publication, the editorial board provides authors with a final, formatted version of the article, as it will appear in the journal, for their review and revision.

Preparing Your Submission

  1. The journal requires that submissions meet the stylistic specifications outlined in the journal’s Editorial Guidelines, including overall formatting (font type and size, spacing, footnote and referencing style, paragraph formatting, arrangement of headings and subheadings, methods for inserting tables and figures, the formatting of dates, and use of the journals’ style for certain terms and names). Each submission must also conclude with a bibliography listing all the references cited, as detailed in the Editorial Guidelines.
  2. The first page of any submission must include the name(s) of the author(s) in Arabic and English, the title of the submission in both languages, and a footnote indicating each author’s institutional affiliation (e.g. “Researcher, Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, Qatar”) and email address. It should also specify the Corresponding Author in the case of multiple authors (see example here).
  3. The first page of any article should include five carefully chosen keywords in both Arabic and English. These keywords should accurately reflect the article’s topic and main themes, to facilitate indexing and retrieval in academic databases. Ideally, these keywords should include a combination of general and specialized terms describing the theoretical, geographical, or chronological framework of the research. They should be consistent with the article’s title and abstract, as well as with the established academic terminology in the relevant field. Repetition and synonyms should be avoided; authors should use the most precise and common concepts to ensure clarity of content and ease of retrieval.
  4. With the exception of book reviews, which include bibliographic information on their first page (see example here), studies, discussions, and translations must include an abstract of no more than 125 words, in both Arabic and English. The abstract should highlight, in concise, precise, and clear sentences, the main problem addressed by the research, the methodology or approach adopted in addressing it, and its most significant findings.
  5. If the articles includes diagrams, figures, equations, graphs, or tables, they must be submitted in their original format, as editable files such as Excel or Word documents. Figures, graphs, and tables submitted as un-editable images will not be accepted. In the case of studies that use field research (interviews, surveys, etc.), the research tools used (interview questions, survey forms/questionnaires, compiled data tables, etc.) must be attached and submitted in separate files.
  6. The journal publishes only photographs that respect intellectual property rights, were taken specifically to support the article in question, and are of high quality.
  7. The total word count of the articles, including footnotes, references, front page contents, words within tables (if any), and appendices (if any), must not exceed the limit specified in the table below. The editorial board may, at its discretion and on an exceptional basis, publish articles with word counts that fall outside of these ranges.

Types of Submissions

Tabayyun welcomes the following types of Submissions:

  1. Studies: These are expected to offer a new research contribution in their field, addressing a specific topic within a clear theoretical and methodological framework. A study must include a precise definition of the research problem, its objectives, and its significance, along with a critical review of relevant previous literature, including the most recent publications on the topic. It must also state the research hypothesis or thesis, along with the methodology used in the analysis, and explain the main findings reached by the author(s).
  2. Discussions: The journal dedicates a section to “Discussion” articles that aim to enrich academic debates on theoretical, methodological, and conceptual issues in the philosophical studies and critical theory. These articles aim to discuss, question, develop, or broaden the scope of implementation of contemporary ideas, approaches, and theories. A discussion article may take various forms, whether a critical review of literature on a certain topic, a review of one or more studies, an examination of the contemporary state of a field of knowledge, a study of the contributions of a prominent researcher or theorist in a certain field (or a comparison of the ideas of two or more thinkers), or a broader discussion of a contemporary academic or conceptual debate. These articles should offer original and coherent scholarly perspectives that contributes to the development of theoretical and methodological knowledge and adhere to the journal’s established writing and documentation standards.
  3. Translations: The journal publishes translations of key texts in the philosophical studies and critical theory, particularly those that represent an original theoretical contribution or a significant addition to a certain field, or those that have achieved widespread scholarly acclaim and high rates of citation. The journal’s interest in translation stems from its academic mission of localising knowledge, facilitating the worldwide dissemination of theoretical output in Arabic, and providing reliable references that contribute to bridging knowledge gaps and enhancing the participation of Arab researchers in global intellectual debates. A text proposed for translation must fall within the translators’ area of specialization or academic and linguistic expertise; translation proposals must be submitted to the journal in advance, using the translation proposal form, which is sent in the format “Research Proposal” via the ACRPS Researcher Portal. Translation should not commence until initial approval is obtained from the editorial board. Once completed, translations are evaluated by a specialised translator, then reviewed before a final decision is made regarding their publication. Approval of a proposal does not constitute final acceptance for publication: the editorial board makes this decision after reviewing the translated text and obtaining the copyright for the Arabic translation from the owner of the original text.
  4. Book Reviews: The journal publishes critical reviews of important, recently published books in its field, in any language, provided that no more than three years have passed since the book was published in its original language. The book should preferably fall within the reviewer’s own field of specialization or primary research interests. While the journal gives reviewers leeway to review the book in any way they deem appropriate, it expects the review to include: (a) an overview of the book’s chapters, covering its research questions, hypotheses, methodology, theoretical approaches, and recommendations, with page references, especially after direct quotations; (b) a presentation of the book’s main contribution and how it breaks new ground, with brief references, where possible, to relevant sources and literature that have addressed the same subject matter; (c) a critical reading, through which researchers can engage with the ideas presented in the book.

Financial Policy

The journal does not pay any financial compensation for published Submissions, nor does it charge authors any fees or charges for publication at any stage of the publication process. This policy is based on the journal’s commitment to the principle of Open Access, which makes scientific knowledge available for free, promotes equal opportunities for researchers across academic institutions, and encourages rigorous research that contributes to the development of academic knowledge in the Arabic language.
