On Postmodernism in Contemporary Arab Philosophical Thought: An Inquiry into Interpretation, Appropriation, and Renewal

Volume 14|Issue 55| Winter 2026 |Theme of the Issue

Abstract

This study asks how contemporary Arab philosophical thought has received postmodern philosophy by examining three interconnected elements: direct and indirect translation, critical and foundational reception, along with an initial analysis of the issues of identity and difference. It attempts to answer three main questions: How has contemporary Arab philosophical thought received postmodern philosophy? How has it employed postmodernism in addressing its own issues? And has postmodernism enabled Arab thought to renew its approaches? The study employs historical and philosophical analysis, revealing the active presence of some concepts of Arab postmodernity.
