Abstract

This article deals with the Arabic novel in times of social and cultural transformations over the last quarter of a century. It takes into account the significance of the transformations in novel writing across the Arab scene over this particularly sensitive period in modern Arab history – transformations that warrant serious study and analysis.

Retired Professor of Contemporary Arabic and Comparative Literature at SOAS, University of London, and Visiting Professor in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Culture, UCLA, 1985-1986. His work began with a PhD thesis on The Emergence and Development of the Egyptian Short Story (1881-1970).
