This study investigates the need to find an interpretive definition for the concept of “the intellectual” in contemporary Arab discourse, a definition which goes further than the functional description that views the intellectual through his/her critical, activist, and value-based role and t confrontation with power and the authorities. It seeks a definition that enjoys consensus or near consensus among those engaged in the production and consumption of culture, knowledge, and ideas, given the strong overlap and partnership between producers and consumers of culture, and between its innovators, teachers, and transmitters. This has had an effect in the renewal and regeneration of culture, and consequently on the movement of society itself, not excluding identity. The study also asks whether Arab intellectuals have reflected on a definition of their role and how it was formed. These tasks will be undertaken through a review of the book The Role of Intellectuals in Historical Transformations.
